Low vision treatments and solutions

An individual has low vision when they have a visual limitation that limits them in the performance of their daily tasks.

What is low vision?

We define low vision as any degree of visual impairment (both in visual acuity and field loss) that significantly limits what a person sees and cannot be corrected with:

  • Conventional glasses
  • Contact lenses
  • Medical treatment
  • Surgery

What eye pathologies can lead to low vision?

  • The main pathologies that cause low vision are:
  • Retinitis pigmentosa
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Macular degeneration
  • Aniridia

At Clínica Oftalmológica Castro, our aim is to help patients recover the activities they thought they had lost due to visual limits. In the same way that hearing tratment solutions facilitate hearing, these visual tratment solutions facilitate and improve vision.

Success and failure factors:

  • Motivation: this is the key factor to success. The patient who is motivated and positive will obtain better results in the adaptation of the tratment solutions.
  • Central defect: patients with central field defect make better use of the peripheral visual rest, patients with peripheral field defect are more complicated because they require a more complete rehabilitation with high orientation and mobility skills.
  • Work on near vision: tratment solutions used for near vision (magnifying glasses) are easier and simpler to use than solutions for distance vision (telescopes).

Rehabilitation and training in the use of tratment solutions:

Before giving the tratment solutions it is important to train some skills that contribute to a better understanding and use of the treatments.

Rehabilitation consists of several sessions aimed at effective use of the solutions.
